New grocery store to be built in Scotlandville

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Leaders say there are plans for a new grocery store in Scotlandville, an area identified as the largest food desert in Baton Rouge.

The Scotlandville Food Access Commission is dedicated to creating solutions by developing a grocery store. At a Monday, April 29 community meeting, two potential locations were identified — Harding Boulevard and Plank Road.

The Scotlandville Food Access Commission Project Manager Eugene Collins said finding property developers and a suitable spot has been challenging. He said challenges are not only social but in acquiring the space and ensuring there is enough funding to finish the project.

City of St. George residents express concern about future school changes

Scotlandville residents like Willie Austin Jr. are in support of a new grocery store, saying it would be “a wonderful development” in the community.

The new development would benefit nearby Jaguar students. Southern University Law Center Chancellor John Pierre said a new store would be great for students to have access to grocery items closer to campus.

“We want to create a place where students can feel welcomed and they have options,” Pierre said.
