Grocery chain Aldi confirms plans to come to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Grocery chain Aldi is coming to the Las Vegas valley, a company spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.

The plan was first revealed in documents filed with the City of Henderson in early January. While today’s announcement didn’t confirm that location, it said Las Vegas is part of the chain’s $9 billion expansion with 800 new stores over the next five years. Aldi had identified a location at 611 Marks St., next to the Best Buy near the Galleria at Sunset mall.

Aldi is one of the nation’s fastest-growing grocers. The chain focuses on low prices with a no-frills business model that claims to save shoppers up to 40% on their grocery bill.

Aldi prides itself on thrifty innovations — like its system to deposit a quarter to use a grocery cart, and then getting the quarter back when you put it back. But mostly, it’s about the thrift. The chain requires reusable bags (it sells its own) and it shelves groceries in their original shipping boxes.

Its stores are smaller than traditional supermarkets, shunning many national brands. The company says 90% of the products are brands exclusive to Aldi stores.

Aldi is growing as the Federal Trade Commission is suing to fight the merger of Kroger and Albertsons. Aldi is based in Batavia, Illinois.

U.S. prices for food eaten at home typically rise 2.5% per year, but in 2022 they rose 11.4% and in 2023 they rose another 5%, according to government data.
