Griffins Jewelry store attempted robbery kidnap victims at home and safe

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Two women who were abducted on Thursday near Birmingham are home safe.

Police say their kidnappers drove them all the way to Guntersville where the men tried to rob Griffin’s Jewelry store.

Those men are still on the run.

Police in Brighton City described the two women as hard-working, caring people. Each morning, using their white minivan, they sold food and water to folks on their way to work at the busiest intersection in the community.

According to Lt. Kenneth Hooten, of the Brighton Police Department, surveillance video shows that those two women were abducted on Thursday morning by two men on foot.

“What they do is every morning between 5 and 7 a.m. they sell food and water to the residents in the area that’s heading to work,” Hooten explained.

Family members of the women called the police after not seeing the van at its regular location on the 4500 Block of Bessemer Superhighway.

Hooten says before he had the opportunity to report the disappearance as an abduction, a call came in from the women to family members that they were in a Lowes parking lot in Guntersville on Highway 431 and their abductors had just robbed Griffin’s Jewelry store located nearby.

“Guntersville PD was actually in the act of investigating the crime scene of the robbery that took place involving a white minivan that was matching the description of the minivan that was stolen out of the city of Brighton,” Hooten said. “After giving them information of the tag number and the vin number of the van, they able to locate the van at the Lowes parking lot with the two females inside of it. They did confirm that the van that was stolen with the kidnap victims was the matching van that was stolen out of Brighton.”

According to Hooten, the women are safe and at home with their families.

Guntersville police have not identified anyone as a suspect in this case.
