Griffins clinch playoff berth

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Grand Rapids Griffins clinched a Calder Cup playoff berth in Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the Monsters.

The Griffins scored three goals in the first period, courtesy of Taro Hirose, Zach Aston-Reese, and Jonatan Berggren.

The Monsters brought the game within a goal thanks to back-to-back goals from Cleveland, but Elmer Soderblom and Matt Luff put the game away with two goals in the third period.

The win marks the 16th straight contest where Goalie Sebastian Cossa picked up a point in the net, marking a franchise record.

“If you would have asked me before Christmas, what are the odds of (making the playoffs), I don’t know,” said head coach Dan Watson. “But since Christmas our guys have dug in, become a team, played extremely hard and it’s rewarding to them.”

“We had a great crowd here on a Wednesday night and I don’t think a lot of teams do that, so I’m excited for the fans come the playoffs,” said forward Taro Hirose.
