Grey's Anatomy star Jake Borelli is leaving the long-running medical drama after seven seasons.

At present, Borelli is in negotiations to return as Levi Schmitt to wrap up his character storylines in the upcoming season 21 (via Deadline).

According to the publication, Grey's is among the shows in for a budget cut moving forward, and this could entail series veterans seeing the number of episodes in which they appear reduced and characters subjected to exits. ABC and ABC Signature, which produces Grey's Anatomy, declined to comment as to whether this was the case.

As for Borelli, the actor has been an integral part of Grey's Anatomy's LGBTQ+ representation. He and Dr Nico Kim, portrayed by Alex Landi, were the show's first same-sex male romance involving two doctors.

On Grey's season 20, Levi and Nico, who's now in a new relationship and expecting a child via surrogate, bumped into each other for an awkward reunion.

Borelli's storylines on the show partly intertwined with his private life, and he came out as a gay man in late 2018, right after Levi and Nico kissed at the hospital.

"As a gay guy myself, tonight's episode was so special to me," the actor wrote on Instagram at the time.

"This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I'm able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey's Anatomy.

"His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you."

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season are airing on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.
