A new Grey's Anatomy trailer has given fans a first look at Ellen Pompeo and Jessica Capshaw reprising their roles in season 20.

The upcoming season is set to premiere on March 14 alongside the last-ever instalment of Station 19. In a newly released trailer of the new Grey's episodes, the show shared a few more clues about Pompeo and Capshaw returning as Dr Meredith Grey and Dr Arizona Robbins.

Posted to Instagram, the clip sees Meredith returning to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after Pompeo, who led the medical drama for 19 seasons, took a break in 2023.

As for Capshaw, she's returning as beloved paediatric surgeon Robbins for the first time since 2018, when the doctor left Seattle for New York to be closer to daughter Sofia amidst her divorce from Dr Callie Torres (Sara Ramírez).

In the trailer, Arizona is back in Seattle for a big, history-making endeavour alongside Dr Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and the interns at Grey Sloan.

"So, who wants to make history?" she asks as several young doctors raise their hands.

Meanwhile, Meredith urges her partner, transplant surgeon Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), to give his interns a second chance after a patient lost their life.

Finally, it seems that Arizona won't be the only paediatric surgeon around as the clip gave fans a glimpse of new character Dr Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales. The newcomer has an awkward run-in with Dr Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) in the parking lot.

More storylines await fans, as the trailer also hints at Dr Teddy Altman's (Kim Raver) life hanging in the balance.

Speaking about Pompeo's comeback in season 20, director and star Debbie Allen called the actress Grey's "queen".

"She's in the first episode, and she's in the one I'm going to direct," Allen told TVLine.

"We have to let her go and do some other things, but she's still our queen. She's still our number 1 on the call sheet."

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season will premiere on March 14, 2024 on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.
