Gregg Popovich reacts to Sutherland Springs shooting: 'It's just inconceivable'

In the wake of Sunday’s mass shooting in nearby Sutherland Springs, a somber Gregg Popovich said he believed it was “inappropriate” to talk about basketball.

So the San Antonio Spurs head coach kept his postgame remarks brief and focused on the tragedy that killed at least 26 people on Sunday morning.

“We won a basketball game, but considering what’s going on today, it’s pretty meaningless,” Popovich said after his team’s 112-95 win over the Suns in San Antonio. “When you think about the tragedy those families are suffering, it’s just inconceivable. It’s impossible to put your head around.

“So I think talking about basketball tonight is probably pretty inappropriate.”

With that, Popovich ended his postgame media availability and head back into the locker room.

Sutherland Springs is located about 35 miles from downtown San Antonio. The Spurs held a moment of silence for the shooting victims before the game.

Sunday’s victory actually pushed Popovich past Phil Jackson for sixth place on the all-time coaching wins list with 1,156.

But as Pop himself said, such a milestone seems empty considering what the community in Sutherland Springs and San Antonio are dealing with right now.
