Greensburg Elementary receives STEM certification

May 21—GREENSBURG — Following the recent news that Greensburg Elementary School received a perfect score on the rubric for STEM certification, it was reported at the recent meeting of the Greensburg Community Schools Board of Education that the expectation is that both the high school and junior high will receive their STEM certifications in the near future as well.

In other news, a total of $9,430 in donations were accepted.

Superintendent Tom Hunter explained that GCS considered the possibility of having free breakfast and lunch for all students.

"Unfortunately, with the new formulas and our free and reduced numbers, we cannot do that so we will be charging for lunch and breakfast," Superintendent Hunter said. "Next year, we will be looking at student breakfast being $1.60, which is 5 cents up from this year, student lunch being $2.75, which is up 10 cents, adult breakfast $2.60, which is up 10 cents and adult lunch is $4.60. The reduced price for student breakfast is 30 cents and for student lunch is 40 cents and there's no change in those reduced prices. This is the first time that we've had a price increase in our lunches and breakfasts in 19 or 20 school years."

The board approved the breakfast and lunch prices. Next they approved the handbook and classified handbooks for the 2024-2025 school year.

Superintendent Hunter congratulated GES and Greensburg Junior High School for being recognized as Distinguished Programs by Project Lead The Way (PLTW) for a second year in a row. Additionally, GES was recognized by the Indiana Department of Education as Excelling for the 2024-2025 Family Friendly Schools Designation.

"That designation doesn't come easy," Superintendent Hunter said. "That is a strenuous process they have to go through. ... Great things [are] happening at our elementary school, no doubt about that."

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Greensburg Central Office.
