Green takes on new academic role

May 26—Retirement didn't last long for a man who is well-known from his previous roles at an area university.

Clarence Green Jr. retired in March after 28 years at Northwest Missouri State University, where he served as chief of the University Police Department, vice president of culture and interim university president. He now has accepted the role of dean and campus director for North Central Missouri College's Savannah campus.

Green said his variety of roles at Northwest Missouri State prepared him for this re-entry into academia. He added that the job will allow him to continue his work with students, faculty and the community he loves.

"When this role came about, it really connected with me," Green said. "I believe my purpose is to help people and organizations achieve things beyond even what they believe they can."

The college president's chief of staff Kristi Harris said Green is tailor-made for this new assignment.

"I'm incredibly excited for Dr. Green to be joining our campus," Harris said. "Not only is he a great person, but he also puts students first, and that is what we want to be about at NCMC."

She said that Green already has shared ideas about future growth in all areas of the Savannah campus, from facilities and student enrollment to the addition of personnel. Green's approach and goals, Harris said, are a perfect fit for the environment North Central is trying to foster.

"We already see the Savannah campus growing," Harris said. "All of that is going to continue to increase, and he's going to be a great captain of that ship."

Green said that although his job does not begin officially until July 1, he has been coming to the campus to interact with students and faculty. He also has started participating in Rotary Club meetings in Savannah to keep the community connection to the campus.

"My own background provides a great connection for the wide range of students we have here," Green said. "This includes first-generation college students, as well as those older-than-average students who are seeking to come here and get more skills and training to advance in their careers."

Green's educational background includes a doctorate in education leadership and policy analysis from the University of Missouri Columbia, a master of science in higher education leadership and a bachelor of science from Northwest.

Green will replace Sue Nichols, who plans to retire at the end of June.
