Green Bay Packers forked elite money over to Davante Adams

Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams has never eclipsed 1000 yards. In fact his career-high of 997 yards came in 2016 when he played all 16 games. However, he’s distinguished himself as an elite endzone target leading all receivers in touchdown receptions since the beginning of the 2016 season.

However, on Friday the Packers receiver became the recipient of a four-year, $58 million deal that also made him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL.

It goes without saying that’s elite money for a receiver who hasn’t quite proved he belongs in that company. However, after Aaron Rodgers broke the collarbone on his throwing shoulder, Adams became the go-to receiver for Brett Hundley. According to Pro Football Focus, among receivers with at least 100 targets, Adams finished behind only Tyreek Hill in passer rating on throws in his direction. Adams led the Packers in targets receptions, yards and touchdowns.

While Adams set himself apart as an endzone possession receiver, he was also explosive gaining yardage after the catch as well.

After being knocked out of two games this season following a pair of illegal hits, health concerns about Adams arose. However, the Packers appear to have been assured by his medical diagnosis. Adams’ extension raises questions regarding the future of Adams’ fellow members of the receiving corps, Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. While Adams will be the highest-paid receiver in 2018, Nelson’s 2018 salary cap hit is $12.5 million while Cobb’s salary cap hit will be 12.75 million.

Aaron Rodgers signaled his satisfaction with Adams’ deal by tweeting his reaction to the news that his top receiver would be avoiding free agency.
