Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has proposed the creation of a European air defense system modeled on the Israel's Iron Dome, the Greek news outlet Novinite reported on May 16.

He stressed the urgent need for a unified defense strategy across the continent to protect against potential threats and called for the pooling of EU resources to provide air defense for each member state, regardless of their national budgets.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias supported Mitsotakis, urging preparation for potential large-scale drone and missile attacks and emphasizing the importance of proactive defense strategies.

According to him, Greece's budget program until 2030 already includes funds to support this initiative.

The Iron Dome is an Israeli mobile all-weather air defense system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries designed to protect against incoming short-range weapons at a range of up to 70 kilometers. It has been operational since 2011.
