Greater Augusta Arts Council presents finalists for new gateway sculpture, public can vote

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Greater Augusta Arts Council presented the finalists for the new gateway sculpture.

The presentation took place in the Linda Beazley Room in the Municipal Building on Telfair Street.

According to the Greater Augusta Arts Council, Artists Eric Randall Morris from ASD|SKY, Wesley Stewart from Metal Specialist of Augusta, Inc., Marc Moulton from Outdoor Art Sculpture, and Gregory Johnson from Gregory Johnson Fine Art were invited to submit their maquettes for consideration in crafting this iconic sculpture.

Organizers say that the sculptures are a part of the public art infusion project paid for by SPLOST 7, and one of those key projects under this initiative is the development of the Gateway Sculpture at Sandbar Ferry Road, which will serve as a beacon of creativity and community pride.

“Public art is one of the best versions of art cause you can go and enjoy it anytime of day everyday if you wanted to rather than waiting on the museum to open,” Wesley L. Stewart said.

“So, it’s a little bit about Black History, so in the center we have Lucy Craft Laney. We also have James Brown and Jessye Norman for our musical heritage, and then, the flowers are all native varieties of flowers in Lucy’s Garden,” Colleen Beyers Stewart.

According to the Greater Augusta Arts Council, the public round of voting will be from March 20th to April 3rd, 2024, and the public can vote at the municipal building in downtown Augusta, or on the AugustaArts.com website.

Greater Augusta Arts Council also states that the evaluation, selection, and procurement process for these sculptures will take place from April 4th to May 31st, 2024.
