Great Smoky Mountains visitors centre in Gatlinburg to undergo renovations this spring

GATLINBURG, Tenn. - The Sugarlands Visitors Center, which welcomes 850,000 visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Gatlinburg, will undergo renovations this spring to improve the layout and design.

Park spokeswoman Molly Schoer tells WATE-TV in Knoxville (http://bit.ly/X0P0jc ) that the building will remain open during the renovations.

The centre will be getting lighting system improvements, a new information desk and new interactive exhibits in the lobby that will focus on national resource challenges, such as air quality and forest health. Schoer also added that sustainable products will be used during the renovations.

Construction is slated to start Jan. 7 and will last through March.
