Grease on the walls and roaches. The worst restaurant inspections in Myrtle Beach area

Roaches, grease on the walls and other violations were found at Myrtle Beach area restaurants recently by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. SCDHEC routinely inspects area restaurants for health violations, its inspections are up-to-date as of May 1, 2024.

These Grand Strand restaurants received the worst inspection grades, according to SCDHEC.

Don’s Deli

Location: 1610 B Church Ste. in Conway

Score: 78 percent

SCDHEC inspected Don’s Deli April 22, 2024, and found several violations. A meat slicer had grime build-up, and boiled eggs, cut tomatoes, cut lettuce, sliced cheese, turkey and ham were held at the incorrect temperatures, according to SCDHEC’s report.

SCDHEC also found that Don’s Deli lacked date marks on the deli meats and egg salad, which are required for ready-to-eat foods. The inspection also discovered chemicals stored near an opened bag of sugar, and grime and food debris on the walls and on shelves.

While SCDHEC originally scored Don’s Deli 78 percent, the agency re-inspected May 1, 2024, and Don’s Deli addressed many of its violations — finishing the second inspection with a 96 percent.

Cositas Rica Mexican Grill

Location: 4335 Big Barn Drive, Unit C in Little River

Grade: 80 percent

SCDHEC inspected Cositas Rica Mexican Grill April 23, 2024, and found multiple violations. The buffet cold bar, juice bar and standing refrigerator in the kitchen were not keeping foods at the proper holding temperature.

SCDHEC also observed that the buffet lacked a sneeze guard and that grease had accumulated at the mop sink, on the walls and on the ceiling in the kitchen. SCDHEC also found that Cositas Rica Mexican Grill lacked the proper certification for its tortilla maker.

SCDHEC’s inspection concluded that Cositas Rica Mexican Grill must have an onsite follow-up inspection within 10 days.

Paisano of Surfside

Location: 720 Highway 17 Business North in Surfside Beach

Grade: 81 percent

SCDHEC inspected Paisano of Surfside April 25, 2024, and found several violations. SCDHEC’s inspector found live and dead roaches throughout the restaurant during the inspection and soiled surfaces in the refrigerator and kitchen.

SCDHEC found pesticides in the kitchen and chemicals alongside clean equipment. Furthermore, SCDHEC’s inspection observed ready-to-eat lasagna, cooked chicken and meatballs held beyond 24 hours without a date marking.

SCDHEC’s report concluded that Paisano of Surfside must have an onsite follow-up inspection within 10 days. If the eatery does not address its violations, SCDHEC will downgrade it.

Captain D’s #3268

Location: 1204 South Kings Highway

Grade: 84 percent

SCDHEC inspected Captain D’s #3268 April 22, 2024, and found multiple violations. A hand sink’s faucet had “heavy encrustations of breading,” according to SCDHEC’s report. SCDHEC’s inspection also found food splatter in the microwave and heavy grease build-up on cooking equipment.

SCDHEC’s report also found grease build-up on the inside and outside surfaces of coolers and grease build-up throughout the facility among other violations. SCDHEC’s inspection concluded that Captain D’s must have an on-site follow-up inspection within 10 days.

Atlas Tap House

Location: 1004 Chester Street in Myrtle Beach

Grade: 85 percent

SCDHEC inspected Atlas Tap House April 24, 2024, and found some violations. SCDHEC noted food was stored too close to the floor, equipment wasn’t stored or organized properly and a 3 comp sink wasn’t cleaned as needed.

SCDHEC also reported that kitchen equipment had grease and grime build-up, among other violations. SCDHEC’s report concluded that Atlas Tap House isn’t required to have a follow-up inspection.
