Grauer targets National Championship: Independent Encinitas school finds success in archery program

ENCINITAS (KUSI)– Archery is a sport that has been around for over 72,000 years, and one that requires a lot of patience and precision.

“It’s survived all of these years and it has changed and adapted, and we’ve gone from just having a twig with some string to this amazing bow with a sight and arrow rest and all the fancy stuff,” said 8th grader Isabella Athanas.

It truly has evolved, just like the program at the Grauer School. One that Athletic Director and head coach Trevor Olson has been shaping for the past decade.

“Every time these kids release an arrow truly their confidence grows,” Olson stated. “That has been such a fun progression to watch.”

This Grauer team won the national championship for high school back in 2017, done well in state championships, and also finds themselves successful in local conference championships.

This years state championship will be held on April 20th with the national championship the following Saturday April 27th.

“I’m excited to potentially kick butt,” class of 2026 member MJ Campanale said about the competition. “There’s a lot of new kids on the team so I think everyone is really excited to just try it for the first time.”
