Burning alerts

The National Weather Service asks people to refrain from any type of outdoor burning during this windy weather.

Conditions are ripe for fire to get out of hand in seconds and can cause untold damages to property and lives.

Cigarette butts thrown out while driving can also escalate into a major fire very quickly.

Bocce tournament

Wanted: Bocce Ball players!

Come join the fun Saturday, May 4, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Grantfork Bowl, 302 E. Pocahontas Road, Highland.

The cost of the tournament is $40 per team with four persons per team. Pay when you sign up. Make checks to Grantfork Bowl.

This is a men/women mixed double elimination until the final six teams.

Brackets will be posted by Saturday, April 27 with teams starting times.

Check in 30 minutes prior to your match. The sign up deadline is Saturday, April 20.

Electronics disposal

On Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., CJD E-Cycling will accept anything with a cord.

This includes all TV models, home electronics, computers, monitors, small appliances, air conditioning units, washers/dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, furnaces, lawn equipment and lead acid batteries.

This is free for all Madison County residents. Appointments are required. Email recycling@MadisonCountyIL.gov or call 618-296-5327 to register.

Grantfork UCC

The annual Appreciation Dinner was rescheduled for Sunday, April 14, following the church service.

It will be the same menu as before with the exception of German potato salad instead of mashed potatoes.

The United For Others Young adult group will sell pie at the Highland VFW Fish Fry on April 5, 4 -7 p.m. Proceeds will be used to help the community.

St. Gertrude Catholic Church

The annual Chicken Dinner will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 2.

This will be mainly carryout, but limited dine-in seating will be available.

The menu will be: ½ chicken, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, slaw, cake, tea and water. The cost will be $15.
