Grant helps Electrolux workers in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $450,000 grant to help re-employ workers affected by Electrolux layoffs in Iowa.

The grant will help over 700 workers affected by layoffs at the company's plants in Jefferson and Webster City and three of its suppliers in Ames and Webster City.

The grant, disbursed on Monday to Iowa Workforce Development, will provide workers with access to training and support. The department awarded a $1.3 million grant to help Electrolux workers in 2010. Monday's supplemental funding brings the total to $1.8 million

Electrolux began moving its operations in Jefferson and Webster City to Mexico in 2008.

Electrolux has closed its Iowa plants but operates four plants in other states and is building a fifth plant.
