Grant Funding applications open for development of abandoned mine lands

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) is opening its application program for its next round of economic development projects.

The application process is for grant funding for these upcoming projects on mine lands that have been abandoned and are available through the Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization (AMLER) program.

Projects through this program must on or adjacent to mine sites that are no longer in use, meaning the that these mines have not been operational since the signing of Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) on Aug. 3, 1977.

The deadline for these applications are due on Friday, May 31, 2024. It is mandatory that ese projects have a final approval through the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation, and Enforcement (OSMRE).

Trusted advisors and representatives from WVDEP, the Governor’s Office, state Departments of Commerce, Tourism, and Transportation oversee the eligibility of these projects before they can be approved.
