‘I couldn’t save him’: Carencro student’s mother’s attempt to save his life

CARENCRO, La. (KLFY) — Another turn of events in the shooting death of Carencro High School student Jaylin Joiner.

In an exclusive News 10 interview, we learned Jaylin’s mother tried to save her son from an untimely death. Jaylin’s grandmother, Thea Boudreaux, says she speaks on behalf of Jaylin’s parents.

March 1 is a date that will be etched in the minds of students, parents and the community of Bradford Drive. On that day the school bus pulled up to drop students off at home, including Joiner of Carencro High School.

“His mom was sitting in the front room when she heard the gun shot,” Boudreaux said.

Boudreaux says Jaylin’s mother glanced out the window to see the school bus still sitting there.

“When she looked out of her blinds she noticed the bus was at a standstill right in front of her house,” Boudreaux said. “She said maybe I will go see. Maybe the kids are fighting on the bus.”

What Jaylin’s mother witnessed was far from what any parent could imagine. It was a nightmare.

“She said when she went around to the bus Jaylin was slumped over on the school bus. He had been shot,” the grandmother said.

Next, Jaylin’s mother did what any mother would do.

“She said I grabbed my baby and I took him off the bus, laid him on the ground and tried to resuscitate my baby,” Boudreaux said. “She said, ‘Ms. Thea, I couldn’t save him.’ She said ‘I couldn’t.'”

Here’s a statment from the grandmother on behalf of Jaylin’s parents:

“It’s no words to describe how much outpouring they are receiving from people near and far. A huge thanks to all that have donated whether it was money, food, words of comfort, etc.  They are very much appreciative in all that is being done,” said Boudreaux.
