Grand jury indicts man who attacked Las Vegas judge with attempted murder
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Clark County grand jury has voted to indict the man who attacked a Las Vegas judge as she sentenced him last month.
As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported on Jan. 3, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.
A marshall was injured in the melee.
A week later, Redden appeared in Holthus’ court again to continue the sentencing. Holthus sentenced Redden to 19 months to four years on the original attempted battery charge.
Prosecutors charged Redden after the attack and his case was progressing in Las Vegas Justice Court. The case will skip that process and resume in district court with Thursday’s indictment.
Redden told corrections officers he had a bad day and tried to kill her, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators first obtained last month.
In addition to attempted murder, the grand jury indicted Redden on eight other charges, including extortion and battery. The attempted murder charge carries an enhancement due to Holthus’ age.
Redden’s family said he struggles with his mental health.
