Grab your grass skirt: Southwest will soon fly to Hawaii from Sac

Southwest announced Thursday that Sacramento International Airport is intended to be among the first four airports it will use for flights to Hawaii.

“We are honored to have been selected by Southwest to be among the initial mainland gateway airports to Hawaii,” said Mark Haneke, manager of air service development and marketing for the Sacramento County Department of Airports. “We look forward to learning Southwest’s planned launch dates and routes very soon."

In addition to Sacramento, Southwest hopes to add flights to Hawaii from Oakland Metropolitan Airport, San Diego International Airport and Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Those Southwest flights from California will take passengers to four airports in Hawaii: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Kahului Airport on Maui, Lihue Airport on Kauai and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole on the big island of Hawaii. Southwest may also offer intra-island flights.

Nothing official is set in stone yet, as Southwest is still waiting for required regulatory approval, officials said.

Scheduled service to Hawaii could start as soon as early November, subject to FAA approval, Haneke said.

Southwest currently does not operate in Hawaii.
