MULLENS, WV (WVNS) – West Virginia Governor Jim Justice made an appearance in Wyoming County on Thursday, February 29, 2024. He brought with him some good news – more than 15 million dollars to build a new Pre-K through 8th grade school in Mullens.

This is part of 111 million dollars being distributed in 19 different counties in the mountain state.

Deirdre Cline, Superintendent of Wyoming County Schools, said this funding is only possible through people coming together.

“It’s an exciting day for Mullens and for Wyoming County Schools. This has been a team effort and it shows once again in Wyoming County that when folks come together, big things happen. The Governor, the First Lady, and of course Baby Dog being here was the cherry on top,” said Cline.

Governor Justice presents the money, but others assess the needs of different counties and decide how to distribute it.

The School Building Authority helps to decide.

Andy Neptune, Executive Director of the School Building Authority, says the new school is a big step above current facilities.

“Well, obviously it’s gonna be a state of the art facility. The county has developed with their architects and designs what they want as a school building. We provide the funding for it. So, it’s gonna be a very exciting opportunity for these young children to come through with such modern technology that new building provides,” said Neptune to 59News.

Students now and in the future will be able to walk into the newest school in Wyoming County. The school is planned to be finished by the Fall of 2026.
