Government explains who will be buried at National Military Memorial Cemetery

Which servicemen and veterans will be buried at the National Military Memorial Cemetery (NMMC), Ministry of Veterans Affairs explained on March 18.

They noted that the full list of people is defined by the law on burial and funeral business. In particular, among them:

Military personnel:

  • who defended the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine

  • Full Cavaliers of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Order of Courage, the Order of Princess Olga

  • those who participated in international peacekeeping and security operations

  • Heroes of Ukraine who have been awarded the Order of the Golden Star since 2014

War veterans:

  • Participants of combat operations: JFO, Russian war against Ukraine

  • people with war-related disabilities: JFO, Russian war against Ukraine

  • In addition, the cemetery will also be able to rebury prominent fighters for Ukraine's independence in the twentieth century

Also, people whose urn with ashes is now in a columbarium niche at other cemeteries but they have right to be buried at the NMMC, can be reburied in the columbarium at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in accordance with the procedure approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

On March 15, the government approved the location of the MNNC. It will be located on two land plots in the Gatne community of Fastiv district, Kyiv Oblast.

On Dec. 8, Verkhovna Rada passed a bill to establish the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine presented its design. The ministry said that the design was based on foreign memorial experience, including the world-famous Arlington National Cemetery in the United States.

The chief architect of the preliminary design was Serhii Derbin, a designer from Dnipro.

In addition to the cemetery, the complex also plans to build a ceremonial square, a mourning house, chapels, a crematorium, a museum and exhibition complex, and other infrastructure.
