Gov. Lee’s proposed budget amendment includes local items

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Gov. Bill Lee’s amended budget proposal includes several noteworthy local items.

The largest is a proposed $6.5 million grant to the City of Kingsport under the Higher Education and Workforce Development category. A city spokesperson confirmed that the grant would go toward the development of the Kingsport Dental Clinic of the Appalachian Highlands.

The second largest is a proposed grant of $2,620,000 to the Niswonger Foundation under the K-12 Education category.

Both proposed grants represent the largest single proposed amendments within their respective categories.

The proposed budget amendment includes $1,000,000 for East Tennessee State University’s Blue Sky Institute, which allows students to get a bachelor’s degree in computing in just over two years and get a job at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

The amendment also includes a proposed $200,000 grant to the Coalition for Kids of Johnson City.

The proposed budget amendment will have to be passed by the General Assembly.
