MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly shared her thoughts on the mass shooting that took place during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration.

Kelly spoke on the incident prior to giving a lecture at Kansas State University as part of the prestigious Landon Lecture Series.

“I do need to acknowledge the tragedy that took place just two days ago in Kansas City,” she said. “This senseless violence took a Kansan’s life.”

She mentioned the multiple children who were shot, as well as the masses of people left terrified.

“The prevalence of gun violence has invaded our schools, our campuses, our entertainment venues, our workplaces, and our homes,” she said. “I look forward to the day when we can have open, honest discussions about the causes and work towards a safer society.”

KSNT 27 News asked Kelly what that work might entail. She says she strongly endorses the second amendment, but that ‘common sense’ legislation is needed to keep guns out of the wrong hands.

“Obviously background checks are important,” she said. “I think red flag laws are important.”

She says that while guns themselves must be part of the conversation, the person using them needs to be too.

“I don’t want to dismiss the mental health issue,” Kelly said. “The mental health of the person using the gun is important too. I think we have to take a comprehensive approach.”
