TOPEKA (KSNT) – On Wednesday, Gov. Laura Kelly requested additional funds to repair the damage caused by a tornado that ripped through Westmoreland.

On April 30, one person died and three people were injured when an EF3 tornado struck the town. The storm destroyed or heavily damaged more than 20 homes and businesses.

Kelly sent a letter to the Small Business Administration (SBA) requesting a disaster loan declaration for Pottawatomie County. The governor requested assistance from the SBA in the form of disaster loans. If approved by the SBA, a disaster declaration would make low-interest, long-term loans available to homeowners, renters and businesses.

To qualify for the SBA disaster declaration, the state of Kansas must show that at least 25 homes or businesses suffered major damage with at least 40% in uninsured losses.
