HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey was in the Rocket City Monday, giving a state legislative update.

The 2024 Alabama Legislature regular session ended Thursday night.

Bills brought to the table during the 2024 legislative session included one regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, the CHOOSE Act, and lottery and gambling bills.

The new DEI law prevents universities and state agencies from having DEI programs. The CHOOSE Act creates an education savings account for students in K-12 schools. But it’s the education budget that included a pay raise for teachers the governor is touting as a success.

This year, Gov. Ivey spoke up in support of gaming legislation and the Alabama House passed a measure just a week after it was introduced. The House also approved a compromise bill in recent weeks. But the Alabama Senate closed the door. The compromise measure approved by the House, lost in the Senate by one vote.

The Senate delivered 151 bills to the governor in 2024.

News 19’s Emily Moessner was at the event, and will have more on Governor Ivey’s remarks tonight on News 19 at 4,5, and 6 p.m.!
