Got the munchies? Pizza chain to open its first Fayetteville location

A Florida pizza chain is set to join the ranks of pie shops like Papa John’s, Little Caesar’s and Domino’s in Fayetteville.

Stoner’s Pizza Joint plans to open next month at the former Dairy Queen Grill & Chill at 3035 Legion Road, Suite 110, chief operating officer Ashley Dempsey said Wednesday. The restaurant will be in an 1,800-square-foot unit in an outparcel of the Legion Crossing Plaza at Legion and Black and Decker roads.

Despite its tongue-in-cheek marketing with references to pot culture, Stoner’s Pizza does not sell food infused with marijuana or hemp products — at least, not yet — Dempsey said.

"It's always on the table," she said. "We let our customers tell us what they want."

Stoner's name originates from stone pizza ovens used at the original location in Charleston, South Carolina, Dempsey said, which opened in 2013.

"It has nothing to do with pot," she said. "But we like to have fun with it."

Stoner's serves up appetizers, salads, pizza, wings, stromboli, calzones and desserts from its 39 locations in the Southeast and Colorado, catering to late-night munchies with business hours as late as 3 a.m. The dough is made in-house daily and the vegetables are cut fresh each morning, Dempsey said.

Stoner's first North Carolina location opened in August in Charlotte, and there are plans to build two more locations in the Queen City, The Charlotte Observer reported last year.

Dempsey said the chain may open another Fayetteville-area location if all goes well with the first one.
