This Has Got to Be Marnie's New Boyfriend on 'Girls,' Right?

News today that Michael Zegen (aka Boardwalk Empire's Bugsy Siegel) will be joining Girls for season three has left fans wondering if the emergence of a hipster-actor favorite is how the HBO show will somehow plan on accounting for the looming absence of hipster-heartthrob Christopher Abbott, who left abruptly after clashing with Lena Dunham.

Abbott, of course, played Charlie, the boyfriend (then ex-boyfriend) of Allison Williams's Marnie, who had recently come into wealth as a tech entrepreneur. Marnie and Charlie officially got together in the season finale, only for Abbott to have creative differences with Dunham and leave the show entirely in April. Hearts were broken. Questions were asked. Williams said that his abandoning the show forced her character to basically skip her third season storyline.

Now Zegen's role, according to Nellie Andreeva of Deadline, is basically a secret, but he seems like a worthy candidate for a Marnie boyfriend, which is obviously the question being asked right now. (Michael Ausiello's headline at TVLine asks: "is he the new Charlie?")

Zegen makes sense for entering the world of Girls. Not only is he a veteran of multiple HBO shows, including Boardwalk and How to Make it in America, he also is a veteran of aimless young-people story lines. He currently appears in Frances Ha as Benji, flirting adorably with Greta Gerwig's Frances. In that film his character also lives with a character played by Adam Driver, who plays Adam Sackler on Girls

So, yes, Zegen makes sense as a potential love interest for one of our main Girls, and Marnie is the seemingly most available one.
