GOP responds to trans-friendly school bill

(COLORADO) — A bill concerning non-legal name changes for students in schools is getting some attention from the Colorado GOP, which has urged parents to remove their children from public schools in response to the new law.

The bill specifies that for purposes of anti-discrimination laws, discrimination based on gender expression includes the use of an individual’s chosen name. In other words, educators must use a student’s preferred name and pronouns.

House Bill 24-1039

A newsletter sent to GOP supporters earlier this week states, in response to the law, “If your child decides he identifies as a girl because he is angry with you, the Colorado government will actively encourage his new fetish by allowing him to identify as “she”… “they”… or whatever nonsensical terms your son’s teachers and peers may dream up.”

Stephanie Vigil (D), one of the sponsors of the bill, released a statement about the new law, which said in part, “This is about combating the ongoing bullying and harassment that LGBTQ+ students often face at school, and the uniquely cruel attacks their families endure.”

“Unfortunately,” Vigil continued, “some have chosen hate, intolerance, and dishonesty to play on peoples’ fears, misrepresenting what this law does.”
