Google's Mother's Day Video Celebrates Gay Moms, Too

The masters of the heartwarming, love-your-children promotional video at Google are tugging at the heartstrings of the American family once again with a new Mother's Day spot called "Here's to the Moms" — and they mean all moms. Yes, Google "slips" a couple gay rights messages in there, showing this popular YouTube video of a son coming out to his mom as well as a lesbian couple cuddling their newborn. The message, coming from Google, shouldn't surprise anyone, since the company has advocated for gay rights before, even angering some people with its Valentine's Day Google Doodle last year. But this year's Mother's Day messages reflect an undeniable sea change in public opinion, pop culture, and an increasing number of states approving gay marriage this year. (Delaware could become No. 11 with a vote on the way today, and the landmark Supreme Court decisions arrive next month.)

That same-sex marriage could go from its preliminary draft of “diagnosable” to the final edit of “so what?” must indicate some positive evolution on the part of the larger human consciousness. My wife, being a biology teacher, puts it even more succinctly: “Why are all these people so worried about who everybody else is sleeping with, anyway?” (Score two for Moms.)
