Google reportedly wants to replicate the Nexus 7 in smartphone form

Google, Samsung reportedly teaming up on a 10-inch ‘super’ tablet to take on the iPad

Given that Google’s (GOOG) own Nexus 7 has proven to be one of the most successful Android tablets yet released, it’s not surprising that Google would want to replicate that success in its own line of Nexus-branded smartphones. Unnamed sources have told DigiTimes that Google is working with several manufacturers “to launch smartphones based on its Nexus 7 platform” sometime in the future. DigiTimes says that Google is giving the OEMs free rein to implement the design and hardware specifications on the devices as long as they “are based on its latest native Android system.” Vendors rumored to be working with Google on project include Samsung (005930), LG (066570), HTC (2498) and Sony (SNE), DigiTimes reports.
