Sources: Google Glass will cost more than $299 at release

Recently, a lot of tech blogs and news sites picked up on a rumor that Glass would cost $299 when it is released. It gained so much steam, in fact, that I was moved to check into it.

So I did. And it's wrong.

According to sources close to Google's Glass team, the price of Glass will definitely not be $299 at launch. Indeed, Glass will cost more than $299 when it's released. Apologies to those who had set aside exactly $299 for their own set of Google specs.

As you may know, Google is now exclusively selling its Glass to early-adopting "explorers," who won a contest on Twitter and Google+ for $1500 (our own Virginia Heffernan has one, and paid $1500 for hers, in fact); Google co-founder Sergey Brin has said publicly that it will be sold for a "significantly lower cost" when it is released either later this year or early next year. The New York Times' Nick Bilton previously reported that Glass will cost about as much as a flagship smartphone costs now, which, if Bilton is correct, would put it in the $600 to $800 range.

I was unable to confirm whether that price range is accurate. But I can confirm that $299 is not. Start saving a little bit more.
