“Good, clean living,” 102-year-old Girard woman shares longevity secret

GIRARD, Kan. — Her birthday isn’t until Saturday — but a Girard-area woman got to celebrate it early, Thursday.

Willadean Bever is a resident at the Homestead Senior Living facility in Girard. On Saturday — she’ll turn 102.

The facility posted her latest milestone on its Facebook page and organized a party for her. There were plenty of treats for residents and visitors — as well as handmade cards from Haderlein Elementary School children.

One of its teachers is a former student of Ms. Bever — who was a longtime educator in Hepler.

“She’s always really treasured her students from Hepler. Here’s another one over here, and they have been really good to her. It was mutual, I think,” said Susan Friggeri, daughter.

“What’s the secret to, to living this long?”

“Like my husband said, ‘good, clean living,'” said Bever.

“What do you mean by that?”

“I don’t know… being good’s all I know. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke,” added Bever.

Bever was born in Arcadia, Kansas in 1922. She’s been a resident at Homestead since the end of last year.
