GM US sales up 3.7 percent in 2012

General Motors US sales rise 3.7 percent in 2012 but lag increases posted by other automakers

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. said Thursday that its U.S. sales rose 3.7 percent last year but didn't keep pace with other automakers. Industrywide sales were expected to rise 13 percent for the year compared with 2011.

BY THE NUMBERS: GM sold 2.6 million vehicles in 2012, up from 2.5 million in 2011. In December, sales rose 5 percent to 245,733, up from 234,351 in 2011.

TOP SELLER: The Detroit automaker sold 418,312 Chevrolet Silverado pickups last year, up about 1 percent from 415,130 in 2011.

HOT MODELS: GM sold 81,247 Chevy Sonic subcompacts last year, more than five times the number sold in 2011. Sales of the Chevrolet Equinox crossover SUV rose 13 percent for the year to 218,621.
