GM recalls 820,000 HD Silverado, Sierra pickup trucks. Where to find a dealer in Delaware

General Motors is recalling more than 570,000 heavy-duty pickup trucks in the United States because of tailgate issues, according to a safety recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In total, the company is recalling nearly 820,000 sold in North America, according to information released Monday from NHTSA and Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database.

The expansion comes on the heels of NHTSA announcing an initial recall of 323,232 trucks last month including Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models sold between 2020 and 2024.

The new recall is for 311,368 Chevy Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 models. All the vehicles are from the 2020 to 2024 model years.

What is the issue with GM trucks?

The vehicles are equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. Under certain conditions watermay intrude into these vehicles’ tailgates and come into contact with the electronic gate-release switch, potentially causing a short circuit. The gate may inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in park.

If the driver does not manually close the gate before beginning a drive, cargo in the bed of the truck may exit the vehicle and become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash. Until the recall is completed, owners should check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18.
