GM May Add 1.7 Million More Crossovers to Its Existing Recall over Windshield-Wiper Issue

From Car and Driver

UPDATE, 11/6/18: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into a windshield-wiper problem that affects many more of General Motors' Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models from older and newer model years in addition to those from 2013, which were already recalled in 2016. The agency said it has received at least 249 owner complaints through November 2, including at least 108 from this year alone. Another 1.7 million cars in the U.S. could be recalled if NHTSA concludes that 2010–2012 and 2014–2016 models have the same faulty wipers. The 2017 model is also part of the same generation but not under NHTSA investigation.

General Motors is recalling 367,808 crossovers in the United States for potentially faulty windshield wipers, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain have ball joints in the windshield-wiper linkages that can rust and separate from their mounts, which can cause one or both wipers to become stuck or inoperative. GM discovered the problem after a Canadian employee reported it in December, and after recalling the vehicles in Canada, the company found elevated warranty claims in the U.S. and decided to recall U.S. models this month. Dealers will replace the wiper linkages at a later date.

In October 2015, GM recalled 31,000 crossovers for wiper motors that could overheat and catch fire.
