Rich kids do not have an easy life. Sure, they may have been born with a silver spoon in the mouth, but while some have fame thrust upon them, rich kids have to crawl out from under to claim it. Sadly, not all rich kids make it, and it's especially hard on the girls.
Kelly Osbourne: of rock, bats, punk and the search for self
You know Ozzy Osbourne, the bite-the-head-off-a-bat, multi-platinum heavy metal god. Sharon Osbourne was the woman behind Ozzy and broke into the limelight after starring in the reality show chronicling her family's life.
Kelly grew up on the road and in the shadow of the unconventional Osbourne clan. Trying to find herself and looking in all the wrong places, the young woman became addicted to painkillers. She realized that they made her no longer feel "picked on."
But she wouldn't be a headstrong Osbourne if she didn't call out her demon. After a few stints in rehab, she is carving out her own niche as a philanthropist, vocalist and all-around artist. She concludes that for her "it's just about not being classified as a 'celeb daughter'."
Nicole Richie: former wild child with a 'great childhood' and rehab record
Richie is the adopted daughter of soul-music great Lionel Richie and his ex-wife, Brenda. Living through the couple's harrowing divorce shattered the young child's world and resulted in every possible indulgence by both (guilty) parents.
Lionel acknowledges that when Nicole came to live with him, she came "with no instructions." When she descended into drug abuse, there was no saving her. This is where Nicole's strong will and deeply ingrained integrity came into play.
She refuses to blame her parents or allocate responsibility for her behavior elsewhere. She took addiction by the horns and entered rehab. She went from party girl to mom. In short, Richie is another rich-kid success story.
Stephanie Pratt: the little sister who's famous but un-real
If the name Stephanie Pratt sounds only vaguely familiar, think Speidi. Older brother Spencer Pratt and soon-to-be ex-sister-in-law Heidi Montag routinely overshadow the younger Pratt. Even so, Stephanie starred on The Hills with brother Spencer, whom she eventually eclipsed on the show.
In spite of her own well-deserved claim to fame, Stephanie has a track record of driving while under the influence of alcohol, dealing with bulimia since the age of 16 and putting on a good show for everyone. It is unclear if she has fully managed to drag herself out of the reality TV star morass just yet.
Peaches Geldof: anything that makes her feel happy is not necessarily a good thing
Dad is philanthropist Bob Geldof, the singer from the Boomtown Rats and actor portraying Pink in Pink Floyd The Wall. Mom is the late Paula Yates who succumbed to a heroin overdose.
When doling out advice to young lovers the world over, Peaches is quoted as saying "party hard and get married." A few months later, the marriage was on the rocks. From there she took a shining to Scientology. Next she lost her gig as Miss Ultimo, when pics and allegations over sex and heroin surfaced.
There may nevertheless be a silver lining on the horizon for Peaches. Rumors have it that Geldof and Eli Roth might be tying the knot.
Khloé Kardashian Odom: keeping up with Kourtney, Kim and mom
The late Robert Kardashian was an iron fist in the courtroom with O.J. Simpson. Mother Kris Jenner is a socialite and manager for at least one of her daughters. Not surprisingly, Khloé has to work hard to hold her own in the midst of the limelight that follows mom and sisters Kourtney and Kim.
A 30-day DUI sentence resulted in a three-hour stint in jail. Subsequent antics resulted in a media blitz when she married L.A. Lakers forward Lamar Odom. Married life has not slowed down the young Kardashian. She is still very much known for her oddball behavior, such as a (supposedly) unconscious response to good food with a happy dance. We wish her well.
