Gigantic Water Slide Set to Spring Up In London's Skyline
London has become home to many an architectural marvel with catchy nicknames, from the building known "The Gherkin" to the ferris wheel known as "The Eye." The latest addition? Get ready for "The Slide," which is fittingly enough a really, really tall water slide.
Designed by Carsten Höller, a designer whose slides have been featured in museums, The Slide will be the world's tallest tunnel slide at 584 feet long, taking riders for a forty-seconds trip through thirty sections and twelve turns, reaching speeds of up to fifteen MPH.
The Slide will be embedded within another piece of art: the ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower, London's tallest sculpture. When the Orbit Tower was built in 2012, its designer Sir Anish Kapoor said that the structure was meant to be like the Tower of Babel, demanding "real participation from the public" if it wanted to be a successful installation.
