Gibson City to vote on raising sales tax for new pool

GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — Voters next month in Gibson City will decide whether to fund a new pool by raising their taxes.

Gibson City mayor Daniel Dickey confirmed a referendum will be on the ballot for the March primary election.

The referendum includes a 1% increase to the sales tax for 20 years. The tax would fund the city’s new swimming pool, as well as other infrastructure projects.

“The Council and I are focused on water, sanitary sewer and drainage issues, however we strongly believe the proposed pool should be decided by the citizens of Gibson City on the March sales tax referendum,” Dickey said in a statement.

According to minutes from a December city council meeting, alderman Scott Davis said the 1% increase would likely cover the cost of a $7 million dollar loan for the pool with 6% interest to be paid off in 20 years.

The city council passed the measure to put the referendum on the ballot unanimously.

The 2024 primary election is March 19. Early voting starts Feb. 8. Illinois residents can register to vote online until Feb. 20 on the Illinois State Board of Election’s website.
