Former NFL running back Joe McKnight was shot to death Thursday in an apparent road rage incident in Tarrytown, La. He was 28 years old.

The incident occurred around 2:45 pm at Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Tarrytown, about five miles southeast of New Orleans. McKnight was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was confirmed by Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand. A suspect, Ronald Gasser, 54, admitted to shooting McKnight and taken into custody at the scene.

“Mr. Gasser did, in fact, shoot Mr. McKnight. We will be releasing additional details as we get through these interviews with these witnesses,” Normand said. “Mr. McKnight did not have a gun in his possession.”

CBS television affiliate WWL reported Gasser was released Friday morning without being charged. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office released no additional information but confirmed that Gasser was released in spite of admitting he killed McKnight.

McKnight is the second former NFL player to be killed in the New Orleans metropolitan area in an apparent road-rage incident.

Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot to death Apr. 9. Cardell Hayes was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Jury selection for Hayes’ trial begins Dec. 5. If convicted, Hayes faces life imprisonment.

McKnight played collegiately at USC, where he drew comparisons to former Trojans (and current Buffalo Bills) running back Reggie Bush. He was drafted by the New York Jets with the 112th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

McKnight spent three seasons with the Jets, primarily as a return specialist. On Oct. 2, 2011, in a Sunday night game against the Baltimore Ravens, he returned a kickoff 107 yards for a touchdown. It is the longest play in Jets franchise history.

After spending the 2013 season out of football, McKnight was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2014, he scored two receiving touchdowns before being lost for the season with a torn Achilles. Recently, McKnight played in the Canadian Football League for the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Naturally, McKnight’s murder stunned the NFL and CFL communities. Many of his current and former teammates as well as coaches and opponents went on Twitter to convey their sorrow.

New York Giants defensive end Damon “Snacks” Harrison, McKnight’s former Jets teammate: “Rest In Peace to my bro Joe McKnight…this is unbelievable, Fly with the angels bro and rest in paradise. Heaven gained a real one today.”

Safety Landon Collins: “Rest easy Joe McKnight, prayers up to his family.”

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.: “Man, this one hurts…this world gotta wake up, life is too valuable. Another good one gone. Rest In Peace, brother…you will not be forgotten.”
