The San Francisco Giants will add veteran outfielder Xavier Nady and five others when rosters can expand to 40 players starting Saturday.
CSNBayArea.com reported Friday that the Giants will bring Nady up from Class AAA Fresno, activate right-hander Shane Loux, right-hander Brad Penny and first baseman Aubrey Huff from the 15-day disabled list. They will also recall infielder Brett Pill and purchase the contract of right-hander Jean Machi from Fresno.
Nady, 33, made the Washington Nationals' opening day roster but was released by the club earlier this month. The Giants signed him to a minor league contract Aug. 4. He has a .270 average with six home runs in 89 at-bats for Fresno.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Nady, the Giants transferred second baseman Freddy Sanchez to the 60-day disabled list. The club has to make another room to fit Machi on the 40-man roster.
Nady could help fill the void of left fielder Melky Cabrera's 50-game drug suspension and Gregor Blanco's struggles.
"Nady has experience up here," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's a dangerous hitter and we like the way he's been swinging the bat."
