German FM lauds US decision on Ukraine military aid

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock commented on the decision of the U.S. House of Representatives regarding military aid to Ukraine, Bild reported on April 22.

"This is not only a good and important moment for Ukraine, but it is also an important moment for securing the European peace order," she said.

A situation has finally been reached in which "the hearts of the two most important Ukraine supporters, the Europeans and the Americans, are beating to the same rhythm again," Baerbock said. She reiterated Germany's initiative to supply additional air defense systems.

U.S. Congress passes Ukraine aid bill

The U.S. House voted to allocate $60 billion to Ukraine through Bill 8035, orchestrated by the team of House Speaker Mike Johnson on April 20. The bill saw strong support, with 311 congressmen voting in favor, 112 against, and one abstaining.

In addition to Ukraine aid, aid packages for Israel and Indo-Pacific security also passed, totaling $95 billion. The share of aid partitioned for supporting Ukraine amounts to $61 billion, of which approximately $14 billion is earmarked for assisting with Ukrainian purchases of military equipment.

The bill is scheduled for consideration by the U.S. Senate on April 23, and, following approval, will be signed into law by President Joe Biden.

The bill also obliges the U.S. President to provide Ukraine with ATACMS ballistic missiles, which Ukrainian officials have previously said would enable a greater range for Ukrainian strike capabilities.
