German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised Russian dictator Vladimir Putin ahead of his full-scale invasion of Ukraine that Ukraine would not become a NATO member for at least 30 years, Germany's Welt reported.

Scholz made the comments during an open house at his office to mark the 75th anniversary of the German Constitution on May 26.

"He assured Putin at negotiations before the start of the full-scale invasion on Ukraine's accession to NATO - this is not on the agenda for the next 30 years," Welt wrote.

"However, Putin does not want to accept liberal, open societies in Europe."

The dictator had "absolutely absurd" ideas, Scholz said, insisting, for example, that Belarus and Ukraine, "should not be separate states."

The chancellor also accused Putin of attacking Ukraine for "absolutely absurd" reasons, because "NATO has never been a threat to Russia."

He rejected the Kremlin's accusation that NATO countries did not take into account Russian security interests before the war.
