Georgia Red Cross looking for new volunteers ahead of hurricane season

ATLANTA, Ga. (WRBL) — According to the Georgia Red Cross, residents could be facing an busy hurricane season. To prepare they are looking for new volunteers.

The Red Cross estimated 2.3 million people were forced from their homes in 2023, with more than a third displaced for more than a month.

“Today, the Red Cross is responding to more large disasters — almost twice as many — than we did a decade ago,” said Adelaide Kirk, Regional Disaster Officer for the American Red Cross of Georgia. “This growing need for help means we need more volunteers trained and ready to support families facing their darkest moments.”

The Georgia Red Cross is seeking volunteers in three areas:

  • Local Disaster Action Team – volunteers help families in need by providing lodging, food, comfort, recovery assistance and other support.

  • Shelter Services – volunteers support the day-to-day activities in an emergency shelter for those forced from their homes by disasters.

  • Disaster Health or Mental Health services – volunteers use their professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands-on care to people in shelters.

All volunteers will receive free online training. For more information regarding how to volunteer visit redcross.org.
