Update: Monday, Sept. 4 – 12:25 p.m. ET

Georgia coach Kirby Smart confirmed Monday that quarterback Jacob Eason sprained a ligament in his knee and is “week-to-week.” True freshman Jake Fromm, who came in when Eason was injured against Appalachian State, will make his first career start when the Bulldogs travel to South Bend to face Notre Dame on Saturday night.

Eason, who was injured when scrambling out of bounds (see below), will not need surgery, Smart said. He threw for 2,430 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2016 as a true freshman.

Fromm completed 10-of-15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut. Fromm, like Eason, was a five-star recruit.

“Jake Fromm did what I thought Jake Fromm would do,” Smart said per UGASports.com. “There hasn’t been a moment that is too big for him since he was a little kid. He played in our scrimmages just like he played out there. He made some big plays and it gave him a little juice and momentum.”

Smart said senior Brice Ramsey, who nearly transferred in the offseason, will serve as Fromm’s backup while Eason is out.

Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason was injured early in the Bulldogs’ opener against Appalachian State.

On the Bulldogs’ third offensive series, Eason went down with an apparent knee injury when he took a hit running out of bounds. Deep in his own territory, Eason dropped back to pass and scrambled right before getting hit by an App State defender when he was well beyond the field of play. After being pushed, it looked like Eason’s leg planted awkwardly.

Mountaineers defensive lineman Myquon Stout was flagged for a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the play.

Eason got up limping. It first looked like he would try to stay in the game, but he went to the turf and was looked at by the training staff. He was helped off the field and replaced by true freshman Jake Fromm.

UGA coach Kirby Smart said after the game that Eason suffered a “sprained knee.” UGASports.com is reporting he “suffered a left knee and ankle sprain” and has an MRI scheduled for Sunday.

The game was scoreless when Eason went down and Fromm, a five-star recruit from nearby Warner Robins, Georgia, led the Bulldogs to touchdowns on their following two drives.

Fromm threw his first career touchdown pass — a 34-yarder to Javon Wims — to put the Bulldogs up 14-0 early in the second quarter. Fromm looked pretty comfortable in his first career action and finished the game 10-of-15 for 145 yards, with the lone touchdown to Wims.

The Bulldogs went on to win the game, 31-10.
