Genesee & Wyoming February traffic nearly doubles on acquisition help, adjusted traffic flat

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) -- Genesee & Wyoming's February traffic volume nearly doubled, the company said Wednesday, thanks in part to the recent acquisition of RailAmerica Inc.

Traffic rose 94 percent to 140,200 carloads. Adjusted for the RailAmerica acquisition, the Greenwich, Conn., railway operator's traffic rose about 0.5 percent.

Carloads of coal and coke more than doubled to 23,815. Adjusted for the acquisition, they rose 7.9 percent. Agricultural product traffic rose 77 percent to 19,264 carloads, but fell 10 percent adjusted for the acquisition.

For the year to date, traffic doubled to 296,227 carloads. Excluding the acquisition, traffic rose 5 percent, the company said.

Shares of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. hit all-time high of $93.19 Tuesday, and are set to open at $92.27.
