The ‘Gemini Giant’ sold at auction but not traveling far

WILMINGTON, Ill. — The iconic ‘Gemini Giant’ in Wilmington has a new owner and soon will have a new home.

The fixture along Route 66 was uprooted on Wednesday but apparently isn’t traveling far.

The ‘Gemini Giant’ was auctioned off to the Joliet Area Historical Museum for a winning bid of $275,000.

The museum said it plans to spruce up the statue and return it to Wilmington with help from the American Giants Museum. The Atlanta, Illinois-based museum specializes in roadside giant statues, such as ‘Muffler Men,’ which were used as advertisements across the country.

The giant’s new home will be alongside the Route 66 monument, which is part of a new entrance to Wilmington’s South Island Park.
