Man shoots himself after chase involving 3 Georgia law enforcement agencies

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a chase involving three law enforcement agencies.

On Sunday around 10:20 p.m., Georgia State Route 115 at Habersham Mills outside Clarkesville was shut down for an extended time due to law enforcement activity.

According to the GBI, Clarkesville police conducted a traffic stop on a truck driven by William Charles Lamberti, 48, of Demorest, GA.

Officials state Lamberti refused to stop and led police on a chase. There was also a passenger in the truck with Lamberti. That person’s age and identity were not released.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and Demorest Police Department joined the chase.

The GBI said that Habersham County deputies performed a PIT maneuver on Lamberti’s truck, which ended the chase.

The truck came to a stop near Ga. Highway 115 and Habersham Mills Road.

Authorities said Lamberti then shot himself inside the truck. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident due to the PIT maneuver. Lamberti will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The highway was reopened around 5 a.m. on Monday.
