Did you know it’s polo season? And Florida is a hot spot for polo.

According to the United States Polo Association’s map of polo club circuits throughout the country, most states are lumped into circuits together, while Florida has its own. Some circuits even include Canadian provinces. (If you’re a football fan, think of circuits as conferences.)

According to the USPA’s interactive map of polo club locations, there are 22 polo clubs in Florida alone, with most of those clubs based in South Florida. In fact, the National Polo Center is in Wellington.

The only LGBTQ+ polo organization in the world, the Gay Polo League, is based in Palm Beach County and organizers recently announced it will partner with the Elton John AIDS Foundation for an upcoming polo tournament in April.

Here’s what to know about the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Gay Polo League’s April tournament in Wellington.

What does the Elton John AIDS Foundation do?

According to the Elton John AIDS Foundation website, the group “funds frontline partners to prevent HIV infections, tackle stigma, and provide compassionate care for vulnerable communities worldwide.”

The foundation is financially supported by Elton John’s Rocket Fund campaign, which is a $125 million campaign that aims to “redouble the fight against AIDS everywhere.”

What is the 2024 international gay polo tournament in Wellington, Florida?

According to the league’s website, the goal of the league is “to inspire and empower those individuals who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender via the promotion of and participation in the sport of polo.”

The Elton John AIDS Foundation is a sponsor of the tournament, including the GPL Polotini Wigstock being held Friday, April 5, at Patagones Polo Club in Wellington.

The polo tournament will go on all weekend long, but the wig party is only on Friday night and you can only buy tickets to watch polo matches that Saturday, April 6.

A Polotini Wigstock party “features cocktails, light bites, a themed wig contest and fabulous entertainment that will captivate audiences,” according to a press release.

Tickets to watch polo matches on April 6 are $50 for general admission, which includes the wig party and Saturday's tournament finals. You can buy tickets and see tailgating prices here.

Is there a season for polo?
